Distracted Driving Awareness

Distracted driving is one of the fastest-growing safety concerns on the road. According to new estimates from the National Safety Council, “our roads are the most dangerous they’ve been in years”. On average, nine people are killed and hundreds are injured each day in distracted driving crashes. Every time you head out on the road, you face distracted driving risks, even if you are paying attention. This is because distracted drivers are not just a threat to themselves; but to everyone else on the road as well. By spreading awareness, we can minimize distracted driving and increase the chance that you and your loved ones make it home safely each night.

Ways to Avoid Distracted Driving

Put Your Cell Phone Away

Cell phones are one of the biggest distractions on the road. Before driving, put your phone in the center console or away in your pocket. Using Bluetooth or hands-free methods, such as Carplay, is an excellent way to avoid getting your phone out. If you do need it for an emergency, pull over safely before reaching for your phone. Never text and drive.

Avoid Driving When Tired or Drowsy

Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash. If you feel tired, get off the road. If you can’t make it to your final destination, find a nearby hotel and get some rest before heading out on the road again.

Don't Eat While Driving

Nowadays, it seems as though everyone is busy or in a rush. While finishing your breakfast on the way to work may be a great time-saver, it’s no excuse for distracted driving. You may think you can remain focused, but you will be less attentive. Spilling food or drinks is a major cause of distraction on the road.

Limit the Number of Passengers in Your Vehicle

While carpooling is an excellent way to be environmentally friendly, avoid having too many people in your car. Driving with friends may be fun, but it can create a dangerous environment. Even experienced drivers are likely to be more focused on their friends than on the road at some point in driving.

Multi-tasking is Not Worth Your Life

The majority of people spend a lot of time in their cars. It may seem like a great time to catch up on some things by calling friends, finding a good playlist, or even texting - but it’s not worth your life. Before you start driving, get everything set, so you can focus on the road and the drivers around you.
